Week of November 22 – 28
KIND PEOPLE WHO HELP
Read:
James 1.27
Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.
Deuteronomy 10.18
God doesn’t play favorites, takes no bribes, makes sure orphans and widows are treated fairly, takes loving care of foreigners by seeing that they get food and clothing.
Leviticus 23.22
Whenever you harvest the crops in your land, do not harvest all the way to the edges of the fields or pick up what was overlooked during harvest. Leave them for the poor and the outsiders living among you. I am the Lord your God.
Viola Davis is one of Hollywood’s most beloved and successful actresses… but she wasn’t always rich and famous. In fact, she was born on her grandmother’s farm in South Carolina where her daddy trained horses and her mommy cleaned houses for people.
Viola had 5 siblings (4 sisters and 1 brother). Her family was so poor, they often didn’t have enough money for food or clothing and they somtimes lived in abandoned buildings.
When Viola was young, she went to church and school and discovered that there were people who cared and would help her.
Viola Davis is thankful for those kind people who helped when she was in need. “I can’t tell you how many people have helped me,” Davis said. “I had a principal and I would come into her office and she would have a paper bag full of clothes. They were hand-medowns, but they were so cute, the little purses, the A-line skirts.”
She has also always trusted that God would be with her and help her through anything.
Viola and her husband decided to adopt a little baby girl a few years ago and they named her Genesis.
Discussion
Do you know any kind people who help? Tell us about them! What are some things our family could do to help others?
Family Project
Make a plan to help someone in need (maybe that’s sharing some hand-me-down clothing or toys or bringing over a meal). Go enjoy your adventure in helping others!
