WHO DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD OBEY? (Acts 4.13-21)

Read:

Peter and John were sharing the good news about Jesus being alive—and many people believed their message and joined them. They were becoming a growing, happy church! But some big and important religious leaders (who had participated in crucifying Jesus) were very unhappy with Peter and John – especially with  their message.

But because so many people had joined Peter and John, the religious leaders weren’t quite sure what to do with them. They were impressed with the boldness of Peter and John – especially since they were ordinary men with no special training or education. And they could see that they had been with Jesus and something was different about them.

After throwing them in prison for a day, the religious leaders still didn’t know what to do… so they threatened Peter and John—ordering them to never speak another word about Jesus again. But Peter and John smiled and said, “Do you think God wants us to obey you instead of him? We just can’t stop telling everyone about all we have seen and heard. We have good news to share, and nothing—or nobody can stop us!”

“God has trusted us with the Good News. Because of this, we share it with others—to please God, not people—and God knows our hearts.”
—1 Thessalonians 2.4

Discussion

Has anyone ever told you to do something you knew was wrong? What did you do?

Will there be other times where you have to decide between obeying God or other people?

Do you think obeying God is easy?

Does God help us when we obey him?

Family Project

Pray: God, help us to obey you when it’s easy and when it’s difficult. We know you will give us the strength to follow you and to say no when we are tempted to do what is wrong. Thank you for always being our help and our strength.
Amen.
