Watching What We Say

Note:

These short devotions are based on a verse or a few verses in this week’s Bible Reading Plan (using Eugene Peterson’s Message Bible paraphrase).

Week of April 6-11

Theme: Watching what we say

Bible Verse(s): James 3.9-12

With our tongues we bless God our Father; with the same tongues we curse the very men and women he made in his image.

Curses and blessings out of the same mouth! My friends, this can’t go on.

A spring doesn’t gush fresh water one day and salt water the next, does it? Apple trees don’t bear strawberries, do they? Raspberry bushes don’t bear apples, do they?

You’re not going to dip into a polluted mud hole and get a cup of clear, cool water, are you?

Discussion

How do you feel when someone swears at you or says mean things about you?

How do you feel when someone compliments, praises, and says all kinds of good things about you?

If your ears could filter out all the bad, hurtful, negative stuff that people say, would you let them?

If you could filter what comes out of your mouth, so that only good and true and positive and praiseworthy stuff is spoken, would you do it?

Family Project

Play the “one of my favorite things about you” game (each person takes a turn saying what one of my favorite things about you is).
